We are called at various intervals in our lives to affect change; to take part in something that impacts our lives and the lives of those in our community. We can choose to heed that call and live in a world of abundance. Or, we can choose to live a life of scarcity - constantly worrying if someone will steal our piece of the pie.
Today I am making the call to those that want to take part in a LANDMARK new media event. I am asking whether people like yourself will stand up and make an impact on the new media industry here in our province. NOTHING like what I'm about to propose has ever been done in Manitoba. So what do you say? Are you ready to make history?
On Tuesday, December 11, and Thursday, December 13, 2007, New Media Manitoba is creating the first of its kind, "New Media Strategy." With the support of forty-representatives and stakeholders, we are hosting two-days of strategy and planning that will guide where our new media industry is headed in Manitoba. There are 4-goals that we will achieve during these group planning sessions:

On November 16 & 17, New Media Manitoba (and numerous supporters) present, Flash in the Can in Winnipeg!
Let me be perfectly clear when I say that to date, Flash in the Can
is THE largest New Media roadshow to roll through Winnipeg EVER. To put
things in perspective for you, FITC makes 5-stops: Chicago, Hollywood,
Toronto, Amsterdam, and WINNIPEG. I don't know about
you, but for these gentlefolk to recognize the awesome new media
presence here, I say is a BIG DEAL. Ok, enough speaking in CAPS and
let's get down to DETAILS. :)
FITC is running for two days this year. Friday, November 16 is for
designers and developers who have experience with Flash 8, or anyone
who wants to see what all the fuss is about with the most current
release of Flash and learn industry tips and tricks. Friday's session
runs for the entire day and details
can be found at the FITC website. Saturday consists of two new media
tracks and you can pick and choose which is the most relevant for you.
A detailed schedule with session descriptions can also be found at www.fitc.ca/winnipeg. Saturday's activities will conclude with an evening party at the King's Head Pub in the Exchange.
The most IMPORTANT part of all of this is, since you are already an NMM mailing list subscriber, you get 20% off your admission! This is the best deal yet! When you visit the FITC website, click on "Buy Tickets," and enter in the code, "NMM20" to receive your discount.

On Wednesday, October 10, 2007, New Media Manitoba, the University of Manitoba's Department of Computer Science, Microsoft, the International Game Developer's Association, and MindSet present, "Develop Mental" for the XBox 360 in Winnipeg! This event will be held in University Centre's Multi-Purpose Room at the University of Manitoba. Registration is complimentary for students, teachers, members of the IGDA, and members of New Media Manitoba.
This October 10, Microsoft's, Develop Mental Game Camp will show you how to begin developing video games using the freely available XNA Framework. Our training session will be hosted in the morning from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm. Due to demand, we have been asked to repeat the training in the afternoon from 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm for anyone that has difficulty attending the morning session.
While developers have always been able to make video games, the XNA Framework has reduced the once steep learning curve for game development and made it into something more attainable for developers. An opportunity like this is unprecedented in game development history. Hobbyists have never before had the chance to play their games on a next-gen console like the XBox 360 without the luxury of friends in high places or purchasing expensive console development licenses.

To register for this technology demonstration, click here.
On Tuesday, September 18, 2007, Peer Allan of Bipolar Software will deliver a 2-hour technology showcase of one of the Internet's hottest technologies: Ruby on Rails (RoR). This meeting will be held at Psych Health on William and begins at 7 pm sharp. Please arrive at least 20-minutes early to find parking and get registered! There is no charge to attend but it does take time to sign everyone in.
In just two short years, Ruby on Rails has revamped web application development. Ruby on Rails boasts a feature set found in large enterprise frameworks, yet is simple enough for beginners due to its intuitive conventions. It is fun to work with, free, and very “Web 2.0”.
Peer Allan, will be the first to admit feeling a bit unsettled using RoR once he began completing certain tasks in minutes that used to take him hours. One line of code can replace hundreds and you’ll start to wonder how you’ve been developing without it all this time.
