On Tuesday, March 18, 2008, New Media Manitoba presents, "Puttting the 'pal' in Drupal," at the Psych Health Centre on Bannatyne. The meeting begins at 7 pm and you must register in advance to secure your seat. There is no charge for admission and the event is open to the entire new media community.
So what is Drupal? Quite possibly the fastest growing and easiest to use Open Source Content Management System (CMS) and Web Development Framework around. Darren Mak of DigitalWeb is our resident expert on all things Drupal and has been working with it since its early inception. He just returned from Drupalcon in Boston where developers around the world converged for super-secret tips on how to optimize your Drupal CMS with some new and exciting results.
This Tuesday, Darren will discuss just why you want to use Drupal to
develop your website and what makes it different than other web
development frameworks. You'll learn about some of Drupal's strengths
and how it can be a benefit within your organization. Darren will walk
through its various feature sets and technical requirements, and you'll
learn the difference between its core system and expansion modules
(which are sweet!), and even walk through a basic Drupal web
installation which takes all of about 2-mins. There will be a showcase
of various sites running Drupal and you might be surprised just how
many there are!
Drupal is a truly powerful tool but can feel a bit daunting to get
started with. Darren's presentation will point you in the direction of
some great on/offline tools and ensure that everyone leaves with a good
idea of how to get started developing with Drupal and how to become a
member of this vibrant community.
Version six of Drupal was released only a month ago, but is already the
talk of the InterWebs. Learn what's new, and the roadmap of things to
come! There will be plenty of time to interact and ask questions as we
go. Whether you are a programmer, graphic artist or are involved on the
business side of things, Drupal is a tool which makes web development
agile for everyone.
Coffee and treats, as always, will be on hand.
We hope to see you out!
