During thursday's show we looked at several security issues that affect PCs, namely; Viruses, Phishing, Spyware, and Adware. Some of the related products and books we spoke about were:
• Norton Internet Security, and Norton Antivirus software for PCs and Macs; made by Symantec. • "Computer Privacy Annoyances," a book from O'Reilly on how to avoid the most annoying invasions of your personal and online privacy. • "Degunking your Email, Spam, and Viruses," a book on protecting yourself from spam, viruses, and worms, as well as how to organize your email. • "PC Pest Control," another book from O'Reilly on protecting your computers from malicious internet invaders.
If you want some instant feedback on how well your PC is protected against attacks and how to make your computer secure, go to www.symantec.com/securitycheck. The site will do a free analysis on your computer's security features.
A notable site to visit for feedback on whether someone is attempting a phishing scam on you is http://www.antiphishing.org. This site indexes all of the most recent phishing and pharming scams that can find their way into your email. If you're interested in a comprehensive list of internet hoaxes, email rumours, and urban legends, go to About.com. I'm not crazy about all the advertising on their site but they maintain a pretty extensive list of recent online and email scams that can cross your in-box. About.com also has a comprehensive list of amusing netlore that folks will try to convince you is real. You can search any information you think is "dubious".
