We looked at a veritable bonanza of technology in honour of father's day. Several of the products we discussed included:
• Sony "Nav-U" personal navigation system. This GPS navigation system goes in your car, you enter in a destination address, then a soothing female voice guides you where you need to go. It even tells you when to turn and recalculates your route if you don't follow directions.
• X-UFO from Silverlit Toys. This remote controlled UFO works better indoors with less wind but can fly anywhere. You need a little of practice to make it do what you want but it's grossly entertaining to use. Just be careful not to maim your neighbors dog.
• Apple's Intel MacBook. Apple's lineup of Intel MacBooks run both the Macintosh Operating System and practically every version of Windows and Linux, so you get two machines for the price of one. Apple's software "Front Row" is like a Media Center for the Mac. It's a great way to for doing slideshows, playing movies, listening to music, etc.
• OWC's Mercury Pro Dual-Layer DVD Burner. These DVD burners are probably the best quality I've tested and can burn a DVD-R in about 6 mins. It's a good way for Dad to backup his movie and photo collections for years of posterity.
• Maverick Remote Check Wireless Thermometer. This little
probe goes into your steak or chicken while it's grilling on the BBQ
and wirelessly transmits the temperature to a remote base station. Mmm,
BBQ...
• Nintendo DS Lite. Less than a week on the market, this mobile
gaming device allows you to play DS games against one another even if
you only have one copy of the game. The bright screen and new
industrial design makes Nintendo a player. I admit that I lined up
early to buy one last Sunday, and now I'm one of the cool kids. Brain
Age is a must have game. Who new math could be so much fun?
The Sony Nav-U can be purchased direct from the Sony Store. The X-UFO
can be found online on Hammacher Schlemmer. The MacBook can be purchased
locally from Advance Electronics or London Drugs. The Mercury Pro
Dual-Layer DVD Burner can be bought direct from Other World Computing. The
Maverick Wireless Thermometer can be found at Home Hardware or Home
Outfitters. The Nintendo DS Lite can be found in practically any electronics department or anywhere you find games!
