On Wednesday, April 25/07, New Media Manitoba presents, "Game Developers in the 'Peg," at the Psych Health Centre on William. The meeting begins at 7:00 pm sharp.
On March 7, we went back to San Francisco and shot 40-interviews at the Game Developers Conference '07. The GDC is the largest and most significant annual event for Game Developers worldwide.
You may recall that I emailed a request back in March looking for recommendations of Exhibitors I should interview. A number of you responded with some helpful suggestions and I even had the chance to gather some of your ideas personally on the Expo floor (you know who you are Ken, Tom, Frank, Ed, and Noah). As a result, we spoke with some really interesting middleware and gaming hardware companies, distributors, and indie game developers, with the hopes of presenting a well-rounded video of the game development industry.
Next Wednesday we will share some great stories during a 1-hour video highlighting the footage we shot over 3-days. For example, we spoke with Alec Holowka, Derek Yu, and Jenna Sharpe of Bit Blot, who won the Seumas McNally $20,000 Grand Prize for their game "Aquaria." Aquaria Bit-Blot is made up of three 20-somethings that met online and developed a unique and charming 2-D scroller. We also spoke with Jonathan Mak, the sole Toronto developer of Queasy Games who won a Design Innovation and Excellence In Audio award for "Everyday Shooter." The most incredible thing I realized when I interviewed these individuals, is that they are no different than any of us! YOU could be developing these great Indie games (and making money) by simply applying some of the skills you already possess to a new medium.
In addition to the indie developers we spoke with, we also interviewed the makers of some great gaming tools including:
Garage Games - the makers of the most excellent Torque Game Engine
NeuroSky - featuring products that let you play games via the alpha waves in your brain
PhaseSpace - LED motion capture hardware tool
Scaleform - creators of GFx that allow you to create game interfaces using Flash
Replay Solutions - providing products that let you replay bugs instantly
Multiverse - makers of Massive Multiplayer Online software that is free!
The above are a just a few of the great companies we interviewed at the
Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. On Wednesday, April 25,
you'll get to see exactly why
we're so excited to share these interviews with you. If you're a new
media developer, graphic designer, music producer, educator,
programmer, or game developer, you will not want to miss this event.
What would an awesome New Media Manitoba presentation be without a little shwag to giveaway? We'll have copies of O'Reilly Game Development Books, Torque Game Engines,
T-shirts and input devices to hand out to some lucky members in
attendance. There is no charge for admittance and all are welcome.
Don't forget to arrive early to find parking and a seat.
Brock and I hope to see you out!
